Hello again, Danny here. That auxiliary cooling fan temperature sensor located in the cylinder head is used in conjunction with the coolant temperature sensor located next to the thermostat. The auxiliary temperature sensor is used to control an auxiliary electric fan if equipped. I've attached pictures below showing its location and description.I use teflon tape on all of them (my previous 86, my current 96 and even my son's 96) leaving the fore-most three threads uncovered. The 86 FSM specifically calls for Teflon tape on the knock sensor. Jake. Huh, I've read that you shouldn't put anything on the knock sensor as it can interfere with it detecting knocks.

I own a '88 GMC C1500 5.7L 350 Saw a video replacing a coolant temp sensor from around the same year truck as mine. He replaced the temp sensor from the side of the block in between the 1st and 3rd spark plugs. As long as the timing is correct and you have no restrictions in your cooling system and the cooling fan is working properly the average temp for the 350 chevy is 190-210. If you are running a 195 t-stat your engine will always run in this area.…

When I start the truck from cold, the temp goes to about 220-230 and the thermostat kicks in and brings it down to 160ish.
