I prepped them to get off all oils, grease, etc. and painted them with VHT high temp paint (Hemi orange), then block sanded the raised portions (fins and logo).I think most folks do it because of the presence of oils on (and possibly in) the old paint. Oil will hinder the long term adhesion of paint and lead to delamination issues.
