There was a post some time back talking about the white in the numbering and letters on K98s and other rifles/guns.One of the things in the post was that some unscrupulous dealers used the white to cover up the imperfections left in the valleys and sides of the numbers/letters that they had restamped.

May 7, 2019. #7. Laminate codes. That under the hood pic is very unique. Looks like the code is stampe in small ink numbers along with what appears to be a military inspection (Waffenamt). If so I have never encountered a Waffenamt on the wood behind the buttplate. Supplier code is Br, date code is 7 51 1938.If your looking for wartime history it has all but been removed from these with Waffenmat markings seen here and there. As a shooter these can be so-so. If your looking for genuine wartime history look elsewhere and you will pay a hefty price. If you are looking for an excellent shooter in a K98 type Mauser get yourself a Yugo M48.Usually the K prefix was applied to Gew.98 rifles that were refurbished by Polish arsenals, but those only had 4 digit serials, not 5. Pictures will tell us more, and help determine value. Typically, from what I have seen, these have been selling for anywhere between $600-800.
