With the iPad oriented with the FaceID sensor at the top of the screen - in Portrait mode - the physically upper volume button increases the volume; the physically lower volume button decreases the volume. When you rotate the screen to Landscape, the physical buttons have the same functions as before.It seems that you can set the muted property instead of updating the volume value.
