Converting r12 to r134

I wanted to share my experience on refreshing my a/c system and converting from R12 to R134a on my 220k mile LS400. My decision to DIY was driven by the nearly $700 the local Lexus dealer charged to "repair" my a/c last year, only to give up when they could not get it to work for longer than a day.

Drain most of the oil by tipping the unit upside down and upright then upside down repeatedly. Then fill with synthetic oil and you will get many happy miles out of it. Like.R12 virtually non-existent, last time we were able to get remanufactured stuff it was going out to dealers at $700 Canadian for 30lb cylinder. Personally would advise against conversion to R134a on older vehicles. There is the oil issue and also some seals and hoses dont take to 134 like they did to 12.Almost forgot, pull vacuum for at least 1 hr after reassembling system with new o-rings and the 134a orfice you have. Re: r290 conversion procedures. There is no such procedure. You cannot convert your r12 or r22 unit to R290 or r600 without changing compressor and expansion device.
