Posted May 4, 2007. when the ships are in port, you won't get charged for going through the ship's cell tower. extra charge for using the ship's tower. what you are charged while in port will depend on if you are on roaming or not. but there were signals for us while in port (cingular).VZ Wireless includes service on Carnival, Regent, Silversea, Crystal, and many other cruise lines, but not Seabourn. VZ charges $2.49 a minute for international roaming on the ship, but since they don't provide service on Seabourn, I guess the cost is irrelevant. We had excellent ATT coverage in all ports, as well as pockets of excellent service at sea in the inside passage (actual ATT, not roaming). Interestingly, in Victoria, the port side of the ship was roaming (Rogers), but the starboard side picked up a strong ATT signal!There are two simple ways to avoid the roaming costs that your cell phone provider may levy on you for using your phone while onboard. The simplest and easiest method is to turn your phone completely off before the ship leaves port. Alternatively, if you would prefer to keep use of your phone in an offline mode, put the phone into "airplane mode".
